Submitting an Absence Online

Planning an extended absence? Any student absence lasting three or more consecutive school days requires prior approval from school administration. If you're reporting a shorter absence, you can conveniently do so online through Skyward Family Access—even before the day of the absence.
Here’s how to report a standard absence online:

  1. Log in to Skyward/Family Access. (If you need your login, please contact your child’s school.)
  2. Select the correct student at the top of the page (if you have more than one student).
  3. Click on 'Attendance' on the left side.
  4. Navigate to the 'Absence Notification' tab at the top.
  5. Click 'Add Notification' on the right side.
  6. Choose the absence date, time, and reason. Adjust times for partial-day absences. Use the comment box to share additional information.
  7. Click 'Save' on the right side.

Please note: This option is available for students at Derby Middle School, Derby North Middle School and Derby High School.

Extended Absence Approval Process

Any absence lasting three or more consecutive school days is considered an extended absence and requires prior approval from school administration. These types of absences often increase around holiday breaks due to family travel plans.

If your child is going to be absent for three or more consecutive days, they must complete and submit a Pre-Arranged Absence Approval Form at least three days prior to the planned absence. Forms are available in the Attendance Office. This does include finals.

College Credit Courses:
While Derby High School may approve extended absences at the high school level, it is the student's responsibility to contact their college instructors to inquire about excusing those absences.
