Monitoring Student Progress in Middle School

Monitoring Middle School Progress

The most effective grading practices provide accurate, specific, timely feedback designed to improve student performance. Grades are only one of the various types of feedback provided to students in Derby schools. There are many lessons learned on the way to success. It is our goal to provide students in every classroom with opportunities to practice skills and demonstrate understanding through a variety of activities strategically planned by teachers and aligned to the Kansas Career and College Ready Standards (KCCRS). Students will receive a report card each quarter reflecting their academic achievement based on teacher evaluation of performance. The report card is an opportunity for parents and students to reflect on their strengths and weaknesses, and to determine strategies for continued growth.

Today’s students are preparing to enter a world in which colleges and businesses are demanding more than ever before. To ensure all students are ready for success after high school, the Kansas Career and College Ready Standards establish clear, consistent guidelines for what every student should know and be able to do. The standards in each content area provide a consistent way for teachers to measure student progress throughout the school year and ensure that students are on the pathway to success in their academic careers. In order to better communicate content specific goals with students and parents, each content area will have standard categories for assignments. The categories are based on the KCCRS. This information will be available on Parent Access.
